Description
Shou sugi ban is an ancient Japanese technique that was used for waterproofing and preserving wood. It involves a deep burning and charring of the wood surface until it turns black and begins to crack; then the charred ash material is brushed away. Shou sugi ban was developed for the purpose of weatherproofing wood, but it is now popular as a rustic decorative design that leaves a very textured and detailed wood surface whose detail is exaggerated even more when coats of polyurethane are placed on it. It is a time consuming process involving torches, grinders, and wire brushes but the end result is a truly unique piece of wood.Listing is for one custom plaque or wall pedestal that has had the Shou Sugi Ban technique performed to it. You have the choice of a regular/round shape, an arrowhead shape, or a modern style broadhead shape for use with European skull mounts of whitetail deer and similar size skulls. Includes an attached keyhole hanger so your trophy is secured to the wall, 1 course decking screw to attach skull, and the 4 screws needed to attach the plaque to the pedestal stand (if you choose the pedestal variation). ASSEMBLY IS REQUIRED Refer to the final pic for skull attachment and pedestal assembly. The pedestal can be converted from a wall pedestal to a tabletop pedestal by simple removing the keyhole hanger and flipping the orientation of the plaque to the wall mounting bracket. Pic in listing shows this configuration for reference.
My local taxidermists have found that using a decking screw with a pre drilled hole on the base of the skull is the simplest and most secure way to attach your trophy
(refer to pics; it is how all my pedestals should be assembled regardless of the shape, style, and make)
. Everything comes pre drilled so that all you will need to finish your mount is a 1/8" drill bit to place a hole in your skull as shown in the last picture and screwdriver or proper bit to place in your drill to assemble the wooden pieces.
Plaque is constructed from Eastern Hemlock lumber and has 2 coats of gloss polyurethane on the front and sides. Measures approximately 8" x 14 1/2" for the round/regular and arrowhead shapes and 10" x 17" for the modern broadhead shape. The Shou Sugi Ban technique puts the harder grain and knots of the lumber on display. Refer to the pics to see the detail that this technique produces.
Plaques are custom cut and edges routered by skilled craftsman NOT mass produced by a CNC machine.
Will combine shipping for purchases of multiple pieces (listing is already set up to display the correct shipping cost based on the quantity you buy). Message if you have any general questions.
