Tommy Nobis was a linebacker with the Texas Longhorns and then the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL. In college, Tommy played for the immortal Coach Darrell Royal and he was on the Longhorn team that won the National Title in 1963. In college, Tommy was an iron man who played linebacker on defense and guard on offense. Royal called him "the finest two-way player" he'd ever seen. In his senior year, Tommy was an Consensus All-American and won both the Outland Trophy and the Maxwell Award. He was the first pick of the 1966 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons and would go on to play 11 seasons there. Tommy was the 1966 NFL Rookie of the Year and went on to be named to the Pro Bowl five times during his career. He was also named to the NFL's 1960's All-Decade Team. The Falcons named him to their Ring of Honor and Tommy's #60 was the first number to be retired by the franchise. Many NFL experts believe that Tommy had a Hall of Fame career, but his chances were dimmed by having played with a series of poor teams in Atlanta. His number was also retired by the University of Texas and he was named to Sport's Illustrated College All-Century Team. Tommy was a huge legend in both Atlanta and in Texas and he sadly passed away in 2017 at the age of 74. After his passing, it was confirmed that he had suffering from the severest form of chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE.
