    Description

    Circa 1790. Austria. 1) A Tailor Guild emblem for the workshop of M. Michael Erhard Master Tailor. The verso translates into “The Abode of Fine Handcraft (Work) of Tailors, 1790”. The emblem in the form of a pair of shears flanked by upright standing lions all within a floral wreath. 2) Dated 1790. Approximate translation reads “Summoner ‘Meisfer’ Johann Conrad Klenschmidt 1790”. The verso reads “Verburger Bauer & Elddman. ‘It does not matter if a farmer wants a house or a castle, they need a nail both small and big’”. The emblem in the form of chased upright Persian eagle/lions below a plumed crown, centering a chase decorated heart form shield emitting arrows (nails) perhaps representing a builder or carpenter’s guild or a nail marker.
